to go out, to go forth (Eth. ወፅአ፡ id. In Syriac and Chaldee the word which radically corresponds, יֳעא ܝܺܥܐܳ to germinate, to expand, as a plant, they use in the sense of going out, when speaking of men and other things ܢܦܰܩ, נְפַק as the Arabs do خرج).
Const. followed by מִן of the place, whence any one goes out, Genesis 8:19; Job 3:11 also followed by an accus. like the Latin egredi urbem; Genesis 44:4, יָֽצְאוּ אֶת־הָעִיר הֵם “hi egressi erant urbem;” Exodus 9:29, 33 Job 29:7; Deuteronomy 14:22, יוֹצֵא הַשָּׂדֶה “that which goes out from the field,” its produce; Jerem. 10:20, בָּנַי יְצָאוּנִי “my children have gone out from me,” i.e. have forsaken me; Amos 4:3, פְּרָצִים תֵּצֶאנָה “go out through the breaches.” Part. יוֹצְאֵי [שַׁעַר]־הָעִיר; Genesis 32:24, compared with 9:10. Once with accus. of that which goes out in great plenty, or pours itself out (comp. Heb. Gramm. ed. 10, § 135, 1, note 2, and the verbs עָלָה Proverbs 24:31 יָרַד Lamentations 3:38; Amos 5:3, הָעִיר הַיּוֹצֵאת אֶלֶף “the city which poured forth thousands;” מִן is prefixed to the gate by which one goes out, Judges 11:31 and בְּ Jeremiah 17:19; Nehemiah 2:13.
Specially to go out, to go forth, is used
(a) of soldiers
(α) to war, 1 Samuel 8:20; Job 39:21; Isaiah 42:12; Zechariah 14:3 (and similarly shepherds against wild beasts, 1 Samuel 17:35).
(β) out of a city in order to surrender it, Isaiah 36:16.
(b) merchants and sailors for purposes of trade, Deuteronomy 33:18.
(c) slaves manumitted by their owners, Exodus 21:3, Exodus 21:4, 11 Exodus 21:11; Leviticus 25:41, 54 Leviticus 25:54 more fully in this sense יָצָא חָפְשִׁי Exodus 21:5 and יָצָא לַחָפְשִׁי verse Exodus 21:2, to go out as free, manumitted (figuratively applied to estates which were to be delivered gratuitously to the original possessor in the year of jubilee, Leviticus 25:28, 30 Leviticus 25:30).
(d) children, descendants are said to come forth from their father, or the ancestor of the race; Genesis 17:6, מְלָכִים מִמְּךָ יֵצֵאוּ “kings shall come forth from thee,” shall be amongst thy descendants. More fully מִיֶּרֶךְ פּ׳, יָצָא מִבֶּטֶן to come forth from the womb, from the loins of any one, Job 1:21; Genesis 46:26.
(e) those who are delivered from danger are said to come forth; followed by an accus. Ecclesiastes 7:18, יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים יֵצֵא אֶת־בֻּלָּם “he who fears God shall come forth from all these” (similarly of any one who escapes being taken by lot, opp. to נִלִכַּר 1 Samuel 14:41).
It is applied to inanimate things. So
(f) the sun is said to go forth, i.e. to rise, Genesis 19:23; Psalms 19:6 the stars, Nehemiah 4:15 the morning, Hosea 6:5.
(g) to plants which spring forth, 1 Kings 5:13; Isaiah 11:1 flowers, Job 14:2 compare Syr. ܝܺܥܐܳ to shoot up, and the noun צֶאֱצָאִים
(h) water flowing, gushing forth from a fountain, Genesis 2:10; Deuteronomy 8:7 מוֹצָא מַיִם Isaiah 41:18. It is used also
(1) of a boundary, terminus, running on, running through, Joshua 15:3, Joshua 15:4, Joshua 15:9, 11 Joshua 15:11.
(k) of money which is laid out, expended, 2 Kings 12:13 (like the synonyms in Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic).
(l) of things which go forth to the people, are promulgated; of an edict, Habakkuk 1:4 of the sentence of a judge, Psalms 17:2 compare Genesis 24:50.
(m) of the outgoing, i.e. the end of a period of time; Exodus 23:16, בְּצֵאת הַשָּׁנָה “at the end of the year,” Ezekiel 7:10 hence of the end, the destruction of a city, Ezekiel 26:18.
Hiphil הוֹצִיא causat. to cause to go out, or come forth, hence of animate beings; to lead out, e.g. the people from Egypt, Exodus 12:51, 16:6 of inanimate beings, to carry out, Genesis 14:18 to draw out, to take out, Exodus 4:6, Job 28:11 to take out as from a case, Genesis 24:53. Specially it is
(a) causat. of Kal, letter g, to put forth plants (as the earth), Genesis 1:12, 24 Isaiah 61:11.
(b) causat. of Kal letter k, to cause to lay out, to exact money, followed by עַל; to lay on a tribute, 2 Kings 15:20 (comp. Arab. خَرْجُ, خِرَاجُ tribute).
(c) cansat. of Kal letter l, to publish a report, followed by עַל of the pers. concerning whom the report is spread, Numbers 14:37; Deuteronomy 22:14, 19 Deuteronomy 22:19 to report words, followed by לְ of the pers. to whom they are brought, Nehemiah 6:19 to promulgate doctrine, lsa. 42:1, מִשְׁפָּט לַגּוֹיִם יוֹצִיא “he shall promulgate a law to the Gentiles” [far better literally, “he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles”]; Isaiah 42:3.
(d) to produce as an artisan, Isaiah 54:16.
(e) to lead forth, i.e. to separate, Jeremiah 15:19.
