1. lift up, lift off the earth, ἐκ μὲν ἄμαξαν ἄειραν Il. 24.266; ἐκ δὲ κτήματ' ἄειραν Od. 13.120 (elsewh. Hom. uses only Med., v. infr.); ἐξάρας [αὐτὸν] παίει ἐς τὴν γῆν Hdt. 9.107; ἐ. χεῖρας in prayer, Plb. 3.62.8; κοῦφον ἐξάρας πόδα S. Ant. 224; βάθρων ἐκ τῶνδέ μ' ἐξάραντες having bidden me rise (from suppliant posture), Id. OC 264, cf. Tr. 1193; τίς σ' ἐξῆρεν οἴκοθεν στόλος; made thee start, Id. OC 358; ἡδοναῖς ἄμοχθον ἐ. βίον Id. 5. remove, ἔπιπλα PLond. 1.177.21 (i A. D.); make away with, get rid of, ἐξάρατε τὸν πονηρὸν ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν 1 Corinthians 5:13 : Pass., to be carried away, of a dam, PRyl. 133.19 (i A. D.).

II

1. Med. (Hom. only in 3 sg. aor. ἐξήρατο), carry off for oneself, earn, δοιοὺς μισθούς Od. 10.84; ὅσ' ἂν οὐδέ ποτε ἐκ Τροίης ἐξήρατ' Ὀδυσσεύς 5.39; ἐξάρατο ἕδνον won it as a dower, Pi. O. 9.10; θοῶν ἐξήρατ' ἀγώνων.. κειμήλια Theoc. 24.122. (In Hom. ἐξήρατο may have displaced ἐξήρετο, aor. of ἐξάρνυμαι, v. ἀείρω.)

2. ἐξαίρεσθαι νόσον take a disease on oneself, catch it, S. Tr. 491.

3. carry off, Pl. Prt. 319c.

III

1. Pass., to be raised, [ τὸ τεῖχος] ἐξῄρετο διπλήσιον τοῦ ἀρχαίου Hdt. 6.133; rise up, rise, ἐξαιρόμενον νέφος οἰμωγῆς E. Med. 106; φλόξ Plb. 14.5.1; κονιορτός Id. 3.65.4.

2. swell, dub. in Hp. VC 15; ἐξαειρόμενα (-εύμενα codd.) ὑπὸ τῆς πιέξιος swellings caused by compression, Id. Fract. 21.

3. to be excited, agitated, ἐλπίδι S. El. 1461; ἐξαρθεὶς ὑπὸ μεγαλαυχίας puffed up, Pl. Lg. 716a: c. part., ἐξήρθης κλύων E. Rh. 109.

4. ἐξηρμένος prob. f.l. in Plb. 4.4.5.

ἐξαίρω: future ἐξαρῶ (1 Corinthians 5:13 Rec.); 1 aorist imperative 2 person plural ἐξάρατε (ibid., G L T Tr wit); 1 aorist passive ἐξηρθην, to lift up or take away out of a place; to remove (cf. ἐκ, VI. 2): τινα ἐκ, one from a company, 1 Corinthians 5:2 Rec. (see αἴρω, 3 c.); 1 Corinthians 5:13 from Deuteronomy 19:19 or Deuteronomy 24:9.

For this strong verb (1 Corinthians 5:13), cf. P Ryl II. 133.19 (A.D. 33) where in view of an attack upon a dam (?) it is stated that there is a danger τῷ ὅλωι ἐξαρθῆνα [ι ], ";of its being entirely carried away."; It also occurs in the magical papyrus P Lond 121.367 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 96) . . . καθ᾽ ὥραν ἐξαίρων τὸν κύκλον τοῦ οὐρανοῦ : cf. ib. 131 * .73 (A.D. 78) (= I. p. 191), and from the inscrr. Syll 802.87 (iii/B.C.) ἀνῶιξε τὸγ γυλιὸν (";wallet";) καὶ ἐξαῖρεν ὑγιῆ τὸγ κώθωνα (";cup";) γεγενημένον. See also Anz Subsidia, p. 270 f.
