Wagenseil, Johann Christoph
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Protestant theologian of Germany, was born Nov. 26, 1633, . at Nuremberg. In 1667 he was appointed professor of history at Altdorf; in 1674 he occupied the chair of Oriental languages, and from 1697 that of ecclesiastical law, and died Oct. 9, 1705. He is known as the author of Tela Ignea Satance, sive Arcaniet Horribiles Judeaorum adversus Christum Deum et Christianam Religionem Libri (Altdorf, 1681), a work containing the-anti-Christian literature of the Jews in a Latin translation and refutation. He also translated into Latin the Talmudic treatise Sotah, סוטה מְס (ibid. 1674), with very valuable notes. Besides, he wrote, Denunciatio Christiana ad Omnes Imperantes qui Judaeos habent sub Juriisdictione sua (ibid. 1703-4; reprinted in Schudt's Jü dische Denkwurdiqkeiten, 2, 339): — Disputatio Circularis de Judaeis (ibid. 1705): — Exercitationes Sex Varii Argumenti (ibid. 1698).
