(חַנֵּק, πνίγω, to choke). Animals put to death by strangulation, not having the blood properly separated from the flesh, could not therefore be eaten without a violation of the Noachic precept (Genesis 9:4). The primitive Christians abstained from them, principally to avoid giving offense to the Jewish converts (Acts 15:20). (See ALISGEMA); (See BLOOD).
