a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Association, was born in Leeds, England, Feb. 14, 1816. He was awakened at about the age of fifteen years, and when nineteen years of age he was appointed to the Sheffield circuit. While laboring in Manchester he had a public debate with Robert Owen, the founder of socialism, in which he showed great skill. Removing to Glasgow, he still continued his services against Owenism, and was very successful in his ministerial labors. He died Dec. 20, 1840, of disease of the throat.
