(1) transit. (pret. once Med. A, Esther 7:5), to fill, to make full. (Arab. مَلَأَ, Syr. ܡܠܳ id. This root also is widely extended in the Indo-Germ. languages, in which, however, for m there is p, as the Sanscr. plê, to fill; Gr. πλέω (πληρής, πίμπλημι), πλέος, also βλύω, βρύω; Lat. plere; whence implere, complere, plenus; Goth. fulljan; Germ. füllen, voll; Engl. full, to fill. Also the Polish pilny; Bohem. plny. The original idea is that of abundance, overflowing, Ueber flie ßen, as is seen from the cognate πλέω, πλείω, to sail; also φλέω, φλύω, fleo, fluo, pluo). Specially
(a) to fill, as anything does a vacant space with its own bulk or abundance; with an acc. of place, Genesis 1:22, מִלְאוּ אֶת־הַמַּיִם בַּיַמִּים “fill the waters in the seas;” ver. 28 9:1 Exodus 40:34, כְּבוֹד יְיָ מָלֵא אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן “the glory of Jehovah filled the tabernacle;” 1 Kings 8:10, 11 1 Kings 8:11 Jerem. 51:11, מִלְאוּ הַשִּׁלָטִים “fill the shields,” sc. with your bodies; surround yourselves with shields.
(b) to fill a place with any thing, with two acc. of the place and the thing filling it, Ezekiel 8:17, מָֽלְאוּ אֶת־הָאָרֶץ חָמָס “they have filled the land with violence;” Ezekiel 28:16, 30:11 Jeremiah 16:18, 19:4 more rarely followed by מִן of that which fills, -Ex. 1632 ; often also
(c) with the accusative of the thing which fills, Ezekiel 32:29, מִלְאוּ יֶדְכֶם לַיהוָֹה “fill your hand to Jehovah,” sc. with gifts to be offered to him; Esther 7:5, “who is he לִבּוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת כֵּן אֲשֶׁר מְלָאוֹ who has filled his heart (sc. with boldness) to do this?” i.e. who has dared to do this? Job 36:17, וְרִין רֶשָׁע מְלֵאתָ “and (if) thou fillest the cause of the wicked,” i.e. fillest up the measure of the sins of the wicked, wenn du das Sündenmaaß des Frevels fülleft (compare Genesis 15:16).
(2) intrans. to be filled, to be full, Joshua 3:15, followed by an acc. of the thing with which any thing is full. Genesis 6:13, מָֽלְאָה הָאָרֶץ חָמָס “the earth is filled with violence.” Judges 16:27, “the house was full הָֽאֲנָשִׁים of men.” Job 32:18, “I am full מִלִּים of words;” Psalms 10:7, 26:10 33:5 48:11 65:10 Isaiah 11:9, etc.; followed by מִן Isaiah 2:6. Specially in Hebrew it is said
(a) מָֽלְאָה נַפְשִׁי my soul is filled, used of taking vengeance, Exodus 15:9.
(b) to be fulfilled, or completed, used of space of time. Genesis 25:24, וַיִּמְלְאוּ יָמֶיהָ לָלֶּרֶת “and her time was fulfilled for bearing,” her time to bring forth arrived. 50:3, כֵּן יִמְלְאוּ יְמֵי הַחֲנֻטִים “so do they fulfil the time of embalming,” i.e. so many days does it continue (compare Esther 2:12); 29:21 Levit. 8:33 12:4, Leviticus 12:6; Lamentations 4:18; Jeremiah 25:34.
Niphal (principally used in fut.), i.q. Kal No. 2, to be filled, to be full, with an acc. Genesis 6:11, וַתִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ חָמָס “and the earth was full of violence.” Exodus 1:7, וַתִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ אֹתָם “and the land was filled with them;” 1 Kings 7:14; 2 Kings 3:17 also followed by מִן of the thing, Ezekiel 32:6 and לְ Habakkuk 2:14. Used of the mind, or desire being filled, Ecclesiastes 6:7 of time completed, Exodus 7:25; Job 15:32. To be filled with iron (with an acc.), with arms, used for to be armed, fenced, 2 Samuel 23:7.

(d) to fill up, or complete a number. Exodus 23:26, “I will fill up the number of thy days;” comp. (g) with another verb, to do anything fully, i.e. thoroughly. Jeremiah 4:5, קִרְאוּ מַלְאוּ “cry out fully,” i.e. strongly, as it is well given by the Vulg. Compare Arab. تملا النظر الى to observe any one closely, جَعَلَ وَمَلَأَ to do, and to fulfil, i.e. to do carefully. Also without the verb, by ellipsis מִלֵּא הַקֶּשֶׁת to bend a bow strongly, for מִלֵּא לִדְרֹךְ הַקֶּשֶׁת Zechariah 9:13 Compare Arab. أَمْلَأَ فى اُلْقَوْسِ and fully املا اُلَّنزْعَ فى القوس Schult.
