an English clergyman and Oriental scholar, was born at Exeter in 1747. He was educated at Eton and at Exeter College, Oxford; became fellow of his college, took orders in the Church of England, held the living of Mamhead (1777-90), that of Hempston, Devonshire (1786-90), and afterwards devoted himself to Continental travel and literature, becoming distinguished as a classical and Oriental scholar. He died in London, Jan. 8, 1830. His published works include translations from the Chinese and Persian, Specimen of the Conformity of the European with the Oriental Languages (1802): Fragments of Oriental Literature (1807): Sunday Lessons throughout the Year (1808-9): Specimen of a Chinese Dictionary (1812):Annotations on Certain Passages in the Psalms, with Hebrew and Greek Titles (1824): besides several works on travel.
