an eminent Nonconformist divine, was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was pastor of St. Stephen's, Walbrook, London, in 1646. Ejected for nonconformity in 1662, he preached in Crosby Hall in 1672, and died in Essex about 1689. Watson was an eminent preacher, and one of his sermons, entitled Heaven taken by Storm, was often reprinted. Besides A Body of Practical Divinity, consisting of one hundred and seventy-six sermons on the Assembly's Catechism (1692; last ed. N.Y. 1871), he published The Christian Charter: The Art of Divine Contentment: A Discourse of Meditation (6th ed. Lond. 1660). His Select Works were published in London in 1821, and in New York in 1855. See Plitt-Herzog, Real Encyklop. s.v. (B.P.)
