Walter, Hubert
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or archbishop of Canterbury, was born at West Dereham, in Norfolk, where he afterwards founded a Premonstratensian monastery. He was educated in the house of his uncle, Ranulph de Glanville to whom, on his ordination, he became chaplain. In 1186 he was dean of York. Oct. 22, 1189, he was consecrated lord bishop of Salisbury, and in 1190 sailed for the Holy Land. He was enthroned archbishop of Canterbury May 30, 1193. Towards the close of 1198, Hubert was summoned to Normandy. The two sovereigns the king of France and the king of England had selected him to mediate between them, and to effect, if possible, a reconciliation. He did not succeed, but this instance shows the high estimation in which he was held as an honest and skilful diplomatist. Hubert died April 6, 1199.
