Sumner, Charles Richard, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
an English prelate, was born at Kenilworth, Warwickshire, in 1790. He was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge; became rector of St. Helen's, Abingdon, Bucks, and librarian and historiographer to George IV; prebend of Worcester in 1822; of Canterbury in 1825; dean of St. Paul's, prebend of London, and bishop of Llandaff, all in April, 1826; was translated to Winchester in 1827; and resigned his see, on account of the infirmities of age, in September, 1869. He died August 15, 1874. Bishop Sumner was an earnest, evangelical preacher, and a hearty supporter of the Bible and missionary societies. He published, Prcelectiones Academicce Oxonii Habita (Lond. 8vo):-Ministerial Character of Christ Practically Considered (ibid. 1824, 8vo; 2d ed. 1835, 8vo), and several Charges. See The (Lond.)
