(Heb. collective with the art. hash-Shumathi', הַשֻּׁמָתַי, a gentile or patronymic; Sept. ῾Ησαμαθείμ; Vulg. Semathei), one of the four families who sprang from Kirjath-jearim (1 Chronicles 2:53); so called either as being colonists of a village named Shumah (שֻׁמָה, garlic [Gesen.], or valuation [Furst]), somewhere in that neighborhood, or as descendants from a man of that name; but in neither case is there any other trace of the origin or location.
