(Heb. Shomer', שׁוֹמֵר , keeper, as often; Sept. Σωμήρ v.r. Σαμήρ, etc.), a variation for the names of two Hebrews.

1. Second named of the three sons of Heber, an Asherite (1 Chronicles 7:32); called SHAMER (See SHAMER) (q.v.) in 1 Chronicles 7:34, where his sons are enumerated.

2. The father of Jehozabad, who slew king Joash (2 Kings 12:21); in the parallel passage in 2 Chronicles 24:26, the name is converted into the feminine form SHIMRITH (See SHIMRITH) (q.v.), who is further described as a Moabitess. This variation may have originated in the dubious gender of the preceding name Shimeath, which is also made feminine by the chronicler. Others suppose that in Kings the father is named, and in Chronicles the mother.
