called Martin Sch n, a German painter and engraver, was born about 1420, and died at Colmar Feb. 2, 1488. The paintings attributed to this artist are very numerous, but there are only a few which can be proved to be his work; among them is a panel in the church of St. Martin at Colmar. As an engraver his reputation was very high. His style is much more elevated than that of the other early German artists, and many of his heads are full of refined sentiment. His Carrying the Cross is a masterpiece; and the Temptation of St. Anthony is held in high esteem.
