a Baptist minister and educator, was born at Robertville, S.C., November 28, 1807. He was baptized in October, 1822, and graduated from Brown University in 1828 with the highest honors of his class. During 1829 and 1830 he was a resident graduate and medical student at Yale College, and in 1831 took his degree at the South Carolina Medical College. In 1832 he was licensed to preach by the Robertville Church, pursued his theological studies at the Furman (S.C.) Seminary, and was ordained pastor of the Robertville Church in 1834, where he remained until 1839, when he accepted a call to the pastorate of the Church at Covington, Kentucky. In 1841 he took charge of the Church at Lebanon. About 1848 he went to the First Church at Savannah, Georgia; in 1850 he became pastor of the Church at Portsmouth, Ohio; in 1858 professor of mathematics and natural sciences in Burlington University, Iowa; in 1864 professor of languages in the Iowa State University, and in 1869 president of Burlington University. He returned to Georgia in October, 1870, and in July, 1871, became principal of the Augusta Institute. Subsequently this institution, established for the education of colored ministers, was removed to Atlanta, and in 1879 was incorporated with the Atlanta Baptist Seminary, under the presidency of Dr. Robert.
