an eminent author and poet, was born at Stewards, near Rumford, Essex, England, in 1592. He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, and Lincoln's Inn. He occupied various civil. office until the rebellion of 1641 in Ireland, and he died September 8, 1644. Quarles was a man of learniig and ability, and the writer of many books in prose and verse, which are admirable for their moral and religious character. The following are a few of his works: Emblems, in five books: A Feast for Worms, in a Poem on the History of Jonah: Hadassah, or History of Queen Esther: The History of Samson: Job Militant, with Meditations Divine and Moral: Sion's Sonnets Sung by Solomon the King: Sion's Elegies Sung by Jeremy the Prophet: Pantceologia, or the Quintessence of Meditation: Divine Fancies, Digested into Epigramns, Meditations, and Observations: Midnight Meditations on Death: Manual of Devotion: Heroglyphics of the Life of Man: The Enchiridion, containing Institutions Divine and Moral.
