(Heb. Pinon', פַּינֹו . prob. i. q. Punon; Sept. Φεινών; Vulg. Phinon), one of the "dukes" of Edom; that is, head or founder of a tribe of that nation (Genesis 36:41; 1 Chronicles 1:52). By Eusebius and Jerome (Ononzasticon, Φινῶν, and Fenon) the seat of the tribe is said to have been at Punon, one of the stations of the Israelites in the Wilderness; which again they identify with Phaeno, "between Petra and Zoar," the site of the famous Roman copper-mines. No name answering to Pinon appears to have been yet discovered in Arabic literature or among the existing tribes. (See PUNON).
