(Φινεές ), the Griecized form of the Heb. name PHINEHAS (See PHINEHAS) (q.v.):
a. The son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the great hero of the Jewish priesthood (1 Esdras 5:5; 1 Esdras 8:2; 1 Esdras 8:29; 2 Esdras 1:2 b; Sirach 45:23; 1 Maccabees 2:26);
b. The son of Eli (2 Esdras 1:2 a): but the insertion of the name in the genealogy of Ezra (in this place only) is evidently an error, since Ezra belonged to the line of Eleazar, and Eli to that of Ithamar;
c. A priest or Levite of the time of Ezra, father of Eleazar (1 Esdras 8:63). (Φινοέ ) In 1 Esdras 5:31 it stands for PASEAH (See PASEAH) (q.v.) of the Heb. text (Ezra 2:49).
