Murray, Daniel
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a noted Roman Catholic prelate, was born in Ireland in 1768, and educated at Salamanca, where he was ordained priest in 1790. He filled various eminent positions in the Church, and finally was elevated to the archbishopric of Dublin in 1823. During the agitation for Roman Catholic emancipation in Ireland, he supported that measure by his influence, after which he took no part in political questions. In 1831 he was joined with archbishop Whately and others in the commission for Irish education, and sanctioned the institution of the queen's colleges. He withdrew, however, on knowing the contrary pleasure of the pope. He died in 1852. He wrote The Douai and Rhenish Bible and the Bordeaux Testament Examined (Lond. 1850, 18mo).
