Jordaens, Jakob
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or an eminent Flemish painter, was born at Antwerp, May 19, 1594, studied under Adam van Oort, and copied the pictures of Titian and Paul Veronese. He was employed by the king of Spain to do some important work. His paintings are very numerous, and abound in the churches and public edifices of the Netherlands. Some of the most celebrated are St. Apollonia, in the church of the Augustines at Antwerp; Christ Disputing with the Doctors, in that of St. Walburg at Fumes; The Triumphal Entry. He died at Antwerp, October 18, 1678. There are a few other etchings by him, among which are the following: The Flight into Egypt; Christ Driving the Traders from the Temple; The Descent from the Cross. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
