an Anglican colonial bishop, was born in England in 1786. He was educated at the Charter House and at Christ Church, Oxford, became vicar of Flitton, Bedfordshire, and was elevated to the see of Calcutta. He arrived in that city, January 15, 1828; on June 23 he set out on a visitation to the Upper Provinces of Bengal, and died while on his way to the island of Penang, August 22 of the same year. Bishop James had acquired some celebrity as an author and traveller. He wrote Journal of Travels in Germany, Sweden, Russia, Poland, etc. (Lond. 1816, 4to): Views in Russia, Poland, etc., prepared in colors: The Flemish, Dutch, and German Schools of Painting (Lond. 1822, 8vo).
