Ireland, John, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
an eminent English divine, was born at Ashburton, Devonshire, in 1761. He matriculated at Oxford as Bible clerk of Oriel College in 1780, and afterwards became successively vicar of Croydon, Surrey, in 1793, prebendary of Westminster in 1802, dean of Westminster and rector of Islip in 1816. He died in 1842. He was one of the earlier writers for the Quarterly Review, and founded four scholarships, an exhibition, and a professorship at Oxford. His principal works are, Five Discourses, with notes (Lond. 1796, 8vo): — Vindcicie regice; or, a defence of the kingly office (Lond. 2nd ed. 1797, 8vo): — Nitice sacrae; or, an inquiry into the scriptural doctrine of marriage and divorce (Lond. 1821, 8vo): — Pagaism and Christianity compared (Lond. 1809, 8vo): - The Plaque of Marseilles in the year 1720 (Lond. 1834, 4to). — Darling, Cyclop.
