(Heb. Choreb', חוֹרֵב or חֹרֵב, desert; Sept. Χωρήβ or Χώρηβ; occurs Exodus 3:1; Exodus 17:6; Exodus 33:6; Dent. 1, 2, 6, 19; 4:10, 15; 5:2; 9:8; 18:16; 29:1; 1 Kings 8:9; 1 Kings 19:8; 2 Chronicles 5:10; Psalms 104:19; Malachi 4:4; Sirach 48:7), according to some, a lower part or peak of Mount Sinai, so called at the present day, from which one ascends towards the south the summit of Sinai (Jebel Musa), properly so called (so Gesenius and others after Burckhardt, Travels in Syria, p. 566 sq.); but, according to others, a general name for the whole mountain, of which Sinai was a particular summit (so Hengstenberg, Auth. des Pentat. 2, 396; Robinson, Bibl. Researches, 1, 177, 551). (See SINAI).
