an eminent English mezzo-tinto engraver, was born in Warwickshire in 1739. In 1765 he went to London and devoted himself to mezzo-tinto engraving, which, without the aid of an instructor. he elevated to a high degree of perfection. In 1789 he obtained the exclusive privilege from the king of Bavaria of engraving and publishing prints after the pictures in the Diisseldorf gallery, and in 1795 he published twenty-two prints from that collection. In 1767 he was elected a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists in Great Britain, and in 1774 an associate engraver of the Royal Academy. He died July 6, 1813. The following are some of his important works: The Stoning of Stephen; The Raising of Lazarus; Christ Calling to him the Little Children; Jacob Blessing the Sons of Joseph; Daniel Interpreting Belshazzar's Dream; The Annunciation; The Nativity; The Virgin and Infant; St. John with his Lamb; The Entombing of Christ.
