a Congregational minister, was born at Windsor, N.Y., October 25, 1792. For some years he was a merchant, first in Providence, R.I., then in Wilmington, N.C., and afterwards in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1827 he became editor of the Weekly Investigator, at Providence, R.I. Two years after he went to Boston, his paper having been consolidated with the National Philanthropist, published there. In 1830 he began editing the Genius of Temperance, in New York city, and later he was editor of the Emancipator. From 1836 to 1842 he edited the Friend of Moan, at Utica, N.Y.; in 1843 was at the head of a paper in Whitesboro', called the Christian Investigator, and it was in that year that he organized a Congregational church in Honetioe, on anti-slavery and temperance principles, to which congregation he ministered for eight years, although he declined ordination. When he returned to New York, in 1853, he became editor of the Radical Abolitionist, afterwards called the Principia. In 1865 he removed to Bozraville, Connecticut, and supplied the Church in that place. From 1870 he resided in Janesville, Wisconsin. He died February 14, 1878. Besides a large number of pamphlets, principally on the subject of slavery, he published three larger works, viz.: The Democracy of Christianity (1850, 2 volumes): History of Slavery and Anti-slavery.
