Gonzaga, Scipione de
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or an Italian cardinal, was born November 21, 1542. Cardinal Ercole de Gonzaga educated him with much care, and at the age of sixteen Scipione had perfectly acquired the ancient languages. He then studied philosophy at the University of Padtia. In 1563 he founded in that city the Academy of the Eterei, of which he remained the protector during the remainder of his life. Finally he entered into the ministry, and was appointed patriarch of Jerusalem. In 1587 he received the cardinalate from pope Sixtus V. He was the intimate friend of Tasso. He died January 11, 1593, leaving several pieces in verse, which were published among others, in 1567, of the Academy of the Eterei. In 1597 the abbot Marotti published Conmmentarii de Vita sua, memoirs written in Latin by Gonzaga. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.
