(Heb. with the art. hag-Cizoni', הִגַּזֹנַי; Sept. ὁ Γιζωνίτης v. r. Γωϋνί , Vulg. Geznites), an inhabitant of Gizosm (Hela. Giezoc, גַּזֹה, perhaps quarry), a place unknown except as the residence of Hashem, the ancestor of two of the sons of David's warriors (1 Chronicles 12:34). As these are called Hasasites (i.e., "mountaineers") in this as well as the parallel passage (2 Samuel 23:32; 2 Samuel 23:34), we may perhaps infer that the city in question was situated somewhere in the mountains of Judah. The conclusion of Kennicott, who examines the passage at length, is that the name should be Gouni, a proper name, and not an appellative (Dissert. pages 199-203). (See GUNI).
