(Ε᾿πιφανής, manifest, hence famous), an epithet given to the gods when appearing to men, The Syrian king Antiochus, brother of Seleucus, coming fortunately into Syria a little after the death of his brother, was regarded as some propitious deity, and was hence called Epiphanes the splendid (1 Maccabees 1:10; 1 Maccabees 10:1; 2 Maccabees 4:17; 2 Maccabees 10:9).
