a Presbyterian minister, was born in New York in 1798. He was educated. at Columbia College, and studied theology in the seminary at New Brunswick, N.J. His first pastorate was near Albany, N.Y. in 1841 he became pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Morristown, N.J.; in 1845 he removed to Newport, R.I., where he devoted himself to the interests of education, and perfected the public school system which Newport to this day enjoys.
