a Biblical scholar, was born at Brandon, Vermont, December 13, 1802. Graduating from Middlebury College in 1823, he became tutor in Columbian College, Washington, D.C., 1825-27, and in 1827 professor of Greek, Latin, and German in Waterville College, Maine. In 1835-50 he was professor of languages and Biblical literature at Hamilton, N.Y.; and in 1851-57 professor of Hebrew and Biblical exegesis at Rochester. He then went to Brooklyn, and became reviser of the Scriptures for the American Bible Union, which position he occupied until 1875. He was a member of- the American Old Testament committee of Bible revision. He died April 30, 1891. His works are principally revisions of books of the Bible, with notes on the same.
