(Fr. chimè re, from the Italian zimarra). The upper robe worn by a bishop, to which the lawn sleeves are generally attached. Before Elizabeth's time the bishops wore a scarlet chimere over the rochet, as they still do when assembled in convocation; but bishop Hooper having scrupled at the scarlet, it was changed for black satin.
