an English Congregational minister, was born at Cummertrees, Dumfries, Sept. 5, 1796. He was converted early in life and joined the Independent Church in Carlisle. In 1817 he entered as student at Blackburn, and in 1820 became pastor of Fishergate Church, Preston. Here he was secretary of the executive of the Lancashire Congregational Union, and was one of the founders of the Lancashire Ministerial Provident Society. After thirty-four years labor in Preston he removed to Halesworth, Suffolk, where he remained till 1864, when failing health compelled him to resign. He returned to Preston and there remained until his death, May 28, 1877. Mr. Carson was a man of strong convictions, and a lover of Puritan theology, which he preached in a terse and vigorous style.
