an English divine, was born June 4,1758. Of the earlier part of his life we have record. At the time of his decease he was vicar of Newcastle-upon- Tyne, chancellor of Carlisle, professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge, and chaplain to the bishop of Durham. Mr. Carlyle was a man of eminent abilities and learning, greatly esteemed land respected. He died April 12,1804. See (Lond.) Christian Observer, 1804; p. 256; Allibone, Dict. of Brit. and Amer.
