a Congregational minister, was born in Boston, March 26, 1706, graduated at Harvard 1725, and was installed pastor of the Hollis Street church Dec. 20, 1733. He was made D.D. at Aberdeen 1765. He was a Tory in politics, and was therefore dismissed from his charge in 1776. He spent the remainder of his days in private life, and died July 5, 1788. Dr. Byles was distinguished for literary taste and exuberant wit. He published a Poem on the Death of George I and the Accession of George II (1727): an Elegy on the Death of Hon. Daniel Oliver (1732): a Poetical Epistle to Gov. Belcher on the Death of his Lady (1736): a Poem on the Death of the Queen (1738): Poems: The Conflagration, The God of Tempest and Earthquake (1744); and a number of essays and occasional sermons.
