a philanthropist, was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1826. He graduated from Yale College in 1846, and studied theology at Union Theological Seminary. In 1850 he went to Europe. While in Hungary, in 1851, he was arrested as the secret agent. of the American Hungarian revolutionists. He was court-martialed and imprisoned, but was soon set at liberty, and an apology was made to him. On his return to this country in 1852, he became a worker at the Five-Points Mission. In 1853 he with others, organized the Children's Aid Society (q.v.). In 1854 he founded, outside of the society, the first newsboys' lodging-house in this country. In 1856 he was a delegate to the International Convention for Children's. Charities in London. In 1865 he carried out a special sanitary investigation in the cities of Great Britain. He was a delegate to the International Prison Convention in London, 1872. He died August 12, 1890.
