an English clergyman and learned antiquary and naturalist, was born at Pendeen, in Cornwall, Feb. 2, 1696. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and was ordained in 1720. In 1722 he was presented to the rectory of Ludgvan, and in 1732 to the vicarage of St. Just. He died Aug. 31, 1772. He published, Antiquities, Historical and Monumental, of the County of Cornwall (1754): Observations on the Ancient and Present State of the Islands of Scilly, and their Importance to the Trade of Great Britain (1756):: The Natural History of Cornwall (1758): and contributed many papers to the Philosophical Transactions. His Memoirs, written by himself, were published in Nichols's Literary Anecdotes, 5, 291 sq. See Chalmers, Biog. Dict. s.v.; Ency. Brit. (9th ed.), s.v.; Allibone, Dict. of Brit. and Amer.
