Beer, Bernhard
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Jewish writer, was born at Dresden in Saxony, July 20, 1801. Being the son of a wealthy family, he received an excellent education in the Bible and the Talmud, as well as in modern languages. In Mendelssohn's writings he found a great delight; and he regarded him as his example in life. He especially labored in behalf of his co-religionists, whose condition he tried to ameliorate. He founded societies for the benefit of his brethren, and contributed many valuable works to Jewish literature. In 1834 he took the degree of doctor of philosophy, and he was the first who preached in German in his native country. He died July 1, 1861.
