Ashby, George, F.s.a.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
an English divine and antiquary, was born in Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, Dec. 5, 1724, and educated at Croydon, Westminster, and Eton schools. He was admitted to St. John's College, Cambridge, in October, 1740, and graduated in 1744. He was presented to the rectory of Hungerton, and in 1759 to that of Twyford, both in Leicestershire. In 1774 he accepted the college rectory of Barrow, Suffolk, where he resided constantly for thirty- four years. In October, 1780, he was inducted into 'the living of Stansfield, Suffolk. He died June 12,1808. He was a valuable contributor to several important works. Bishop Percy, Mr. Granger, Richard Gough, Thomas Harmer, James Barrington, and others acknowledge his intelligent aid.
