Arnaud, Henri
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or pastor and military leader of the Vaudois, was born at La Tour, in Piedmont, 1641. His early history is obscure, but he is said to have been a soldier before entering the ministry among the persecuted Vaudois. In 1689 he led his people in their efforts to recover their native land and their right to worship God in peace. William III of England gave him a colonel's commission, and he served with great distinction, at the head of 1200 Vaudois, under Marlborough. When his people were exiled in 1698, he became their pastor at Schiinberg, and died there, Sept. 8, 1721. Ii this retirement he wrote the history of his enterprise, under the title Histoire de la glorieuse Rentree des Vaudois dans leurs Vallees, printed in 1710, and dedicated to Anne, Queen of Great Britain. The French edition of this work is very rare; it has been translated into English, under the title The glorious Recovery by the Vaudois of their Valleys, trans. by H. D. Ackland (Lond. 1827, 8vo).
