was born at Yarmouth, Mass., Aug. 28, 1771, and graduated in 1794 at Harvard, where he was distinguished for his knowledge of Oriental languages. In 1799 he was ordained pastor of the Congregational church at Portsmouth, N. H., but in 1805 devoted himself to teaching. He conducted female schools successively in Boston, Newark. New York, and in 1817 was appointed president of Meadville College, Penn., which office he held till 1831. He died at Pittsburg, July 5, 1839. Alden, Timothy,

a Congregational minister, father of Rev. Dr. Timothy Alden, was a descendant of the famous John Alden of Plymouth renown. He was born in 1737, graduated at Harvard in the class of 1762, and was ordained pastor of the Church in Yarmouth, Mass., where he remained until his death, which occurred Nov. 13, 1821. He was a faithful, laborious minister of the Gospel. See Allen, Amer. Biog. s.v. (J. C.S.)
