a Protestant missionary, was a native of Suabia, and was sent into Southern Africa by the Missionary Society of London. He arrived at Cape Town Jan. 19, 1805, and explored, with other missionaries, the savage country in order to preach Christianity. After having founded the establishment Warn- Bath, he returned, in May, 1810, to the Cape, and there married a Dutch lady, who accompanied him to Warn-Bath. His establishment was devastated by an African chief. He afterwards collected the remains of his colony at Pella, to the south of the Orange River. He died at Cape Town, July 25,1815.
