Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
(Azon, or Asson, known also as HERMERIUS, or HENRICUS), a French prelate, was born in the diocese of Chalons-sur-Marne, in the early part of the 10th century. He embraced the monastic life at Luxeuil, under the direction of the Benedictines. He succeeded, about 968, his friend Alberic as abbot of the monastery of Montier-en-Der. He labored earnestly for the spiritual and temporal welfare of the community, and, under the auspices of Mattasses; bishop of Troyes, undertook to regulate the psalmody and order of divine service throughout the diocese. He was employed for nearly two years by Bruno, bishop of Langres, in re establishing good order in the Monastery of St. Benignus of Dijon. He died at Chanmpagne in June, 992, while on a voyage to Jerusalem. His writings are, Vita S. Frodoberti Abbatis Primi Cellensis (in Mabillon, Annales Ord. Bened. ii, 626):- Vita S.
