Abernethy (or Abernethie), John, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a Scotch prelate, studied at the University of Edinburgh, was laureated in 1587, and became reader in 1588. He was a member of the Assemblies in 1601, 1602, 1608, and 1616; signed a protest against introducing episcopacy in 1606; was chosen constant moderator of the Presbytery; solicited the appointment to the archbishopric of Glasgow in 1615; was a member of the Court of High Commission in 1616; made bishop of Caithness the same year, and demitted September 15, 1635; deposed in 1638, but was permitted to minister in any place. He died April 24, 1639, aged about seventy-two years. He published, Christian and Heavenly Treatise concerning Physick for the Soul (1615): — Two Letters to King James VI (1620): — The Duty and Dignity of a Christian (Lond. eod.). See Fasti Eccles.
