an English Baptist minister and journalist, was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1833. He early became connected with journalistic work, serving on the Kilmarnock Journal, the Ayr Advertiser, the North British. Mail, Pall-Mall Gazette, and many others. In 1855 he was a student in Edinburgh University, and in 1857 in Regents Park College. He served Ramsey Hunts, Blackburn Road, Acrington, and Blackpool as pastor. His health giving way he returned to journalism in 1876. In 1882 he became editor and later sole proprietor of the Christian Leader. He was the author of Thomas Carlyle: The Man and His Books. He died August 5, 1891. See (Lond.) Baptist Hand-book, 1892.
