a French Jesuit, brother of the diplomat Louis, was born in Paris, Jan. 22,1632. Being admitted into that order at the age of nineteen, he taught the humanities for some time in Brittany, and then, by the royal order, joined the count of Crecy (his brother) in Germany (1672), where he was useful in diplomatic services. The remainder of his life was spent in laborious missionary work in India. He finally died in Paris, May 16, 1706, leaving a number of historical and other works, for which see Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
