This number is sometimes used in Scripture in a symbolical sense it typifies the connection between the magistracy and the ministry in the persons of Moses and Aaron; the two systems of idolatry which were learned in Egyptian and Babylonian bondage; the Old and New Tests.; the Jewish and Christian dispensations; and, among the early fathers, the divine and human natures of Christ. Several of the early heretics endeavored to introduce the Persian duality into the Christian system, and they therefore declared that the number two had a more mystic sanctity than any other; Traces of this delusion may be found so late as the 9th century of the Church.
