a Baptist minister, was born at Cornwallis, N.S., August 6, 1794. He was baptized by Reverend E. Manning, May 14, 1815, taught school in Cornwallis, was ordained July 17, 1817, labored as a home missionary in several parts of the province, became pastor at Amherst in 1819, at St. John, N.B., in 1825, at Tryon and Bedeque, P.E.I., in 1833, at Amherst again in 1834, where he was also in charge of the grammar school, was principal of the Baptist Seminary at Fredericton, N.B., in 1835-36, returned to Amherst in 1840, made several evangelistic tours through the provinces, became pastor at Aylesford, N.S., in 1851, and in this relation he continued until his death, assisted after 1870 by a colleague. He died at Kingston, Aylesford, January 19, 1881. In January 1827, Tupper became editor of the Baptist Missionary Magazine of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, which he continued until 1833, and followed by the Christian Messenger (Halifax, N.S.) in 1837. He published a review of Reverend Dr. G. Burns, of St. John, N.B., on The Subjects and Modes of Baptism (1830): Baptist Principles Vindicated, in reply to Reverend J.W.D. Gray, of St. John (1844): A Discussion of the Translation of "Baptizo" and a Vindication of the Action of the Baptist Missionaries in Burmah (1846): Expository Notes on the Syriac Version of the Scriptures. He was a man of vast linguistic learning. He was one of the pioneers of temperance. See Bill, History of the Baptists in the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
