an English divine, was born about 1710, and educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, of which he afterwards became fellow and tutor. In 1739 he obtained the rectory of Sturmer, Essex, and two years later was elected public orator of the university, and was appointed chaplain to Potter, archbishop of Canterbury. In 1744 he was created D.D. at Cambridge; was afterwards collated to the rectory of Great Chart, Kent, and to the vicarage of Minster, Isle of Thanet; both of which he resigned in 1757 for the valuable vicarage of Rochdale, Lancashire, where he remained until his death, March 28,1772. His writings are, Epistola ad Virunm Eruditum Conyers Middleton, etc. (Camb. 1741, 8vo): Observations on the Present Collection of Epistles between Cicero and Brutus: Sermon before the House of Commons (May 29,1746): Vindication of the Power of the State to Prohibit Clandestine Marriages, etc. (1755) : Marriage in Society Stated, etc. (1755) : Lectures on Natural and Revealed Religion (published after his death, in 4to).
