Smith, Socrates
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a minister of the Presbyterian Church, was born in Henniker, N.H., June 16, 1814. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1842 and entered the Union Theological Seminary, where he took the full course and graduated in 1845. He was soon thereafter ordained, and accepted a call Nov. 23, 1845, to Beardstown, Ill., as a stated supply. After remaining one year, he became a stated supply to the Panther Creek Church, Ill., where he remained until 1849, and then became teacher of a classical school in Greenville, Ill. He continued in this position until 1853, when he received a commission as home missionary, and labored at Jerseyville and Troy, Ill., to 1859. After this he resigned his commission and remained without charge in Greenville, where he died in 1869. (W.P.S.)
