a Dutch ascetic author, was born at Breda, May 11, 1599. As an evangelical minister he preached at Maerssen, in the province of Utrecht. In 1638 he was called to Breda, where he founded a college, of which he was the first director and professor of theology. The University of Oxford conferred upon him the degree of doctor of theology. He was a fine linguist, and corresponded with the most celebrated theologians of his time. His principal works are, Painted Jezebel (1654): Treatises on the Care, Authority, and Duty of Elders in the Church (1659-64): and Meditations on religious subjects. These are all written in Flemish.
