Prevost, Pierre Robert Le
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
a French pulpit orator of some note, was born at Rouen in 1675. From his youth he displayed a marked propensity for preaching, and proceeded to Paris to improve himself after the model of celebrated orators. Sought after with eagerness in the city, he was no less a favorite at court, where he preached statedly during Advent from 1714 to 1727, and in 1718 during Lent. At this last date he was provided with a canonship at Chartres. The record of his funeral sermons, published by Lottin (Paris, 1765), contains those of the cardinal of Fü rstenberg (of which Flechier speaks with eulogy), of Godet of Marais, bishop of Chartres, of Louis XIV and of the duke of Berri; sermons, and a panegyric of St. Louis. He died in 1736 at Chartres. — Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Gé neralé, s.v. See Vinet, French Lit. p. 116 sq.
